Electric drives offer enormous potential for energy conservation. This has become universally recognized. Factory automation, transportation (all-electric and hybrid-electric vehicles), and a trend to replace hydraulic drives by electric ones, has increased interest among employers and students for a proper, based on solid theoretical foundations, education in this area. Still the course will require only a basic undergraduate preparation in circuits, electromagnetics, and energy. Advanced topics of special electric machinery and control methods will be introduced on in-time basis. The course is intended to become a 500 level senior undergraduate/graduate course. Students further interested in this area may take EL568 which covers electromechanical aspects of electric drives and EL660 which is mainly on ac-dc and dc-ac conversion for drives and utility applications.
